"Bellydance" is much more than the modern cabaret version with sequins and beads. It has a rich and diverse history, spanning hundreds of years and many distinct regional styles.
Join us for this fun workshop where you will be introduced to the basics of:
- Haggala, from the Western Desert, which gave us the Egyptian Walk or
3/4 shimmy,
- Eskanderany, a light flirty dance from the Mediterranean city of
Alexandria,
- Nubian, an African-influenced style that is still danced in villages around Aswan.
You will discover that many of the bellydance moves you already know; hip drops, circles, shimmies and so on come from Egyptian folkloric roots. By learning these dances, you will be able to add texture to familiar bellydance moves, as well as have fun with new styles of movement, music, attitude and costumes.
